When seeing savers queue for hours outside Northern Rock, you could be forgiven for thinking it was 1929 all over again. Luckily, it would appear it is Apocalypse Postponed, as VCs continue to invest. According to consultants Ascendant, the usually quiet summer period saw a 68 per cent jump in deals, with £215m committed in total. Investment so far this year already tops the entire 2006 total.

This is great news, especially for the tech sector which badly needs early stage funding to develop. Dragon’s Den has demonstrated that there’s plenty of innovation out there in the UK – after all, we did invent the internet, the jet engine, radar, the camera, and various other essential items, so we’re quite good at this. But we still need the financial boost to make the innovation fly.
