Street collection

Over at CNET comes the news that Nokia are installing mobile phone recycling kiosks on the streets of Malaysia. And, not only can you drop off your old phone, but you can also leave your own phone for a quick service. (I’ve never needed to get my phone serviced, but I imagine when phones are even more complex than they are already and your holiday snaps are refusing to download, this sort of MOT for your phone could be useful.)

Apparently up to 80% of a Nokia device is recyclable and if all of the 3 billion people globally who own mobiles brought back just one unused device, we could save 240,000 tons of raw materials. This from a Nokia spokesperson obviously. But I can’t rubbish (ho ho) this initiative - it’s good to see Nokia taking responsibility and I look forward to seeing kiosks next to the paper, glass and clothes bins on our streets.
