Obama gets busy texting

According to Nielsen Mobile and news.com, Barack Obama sent a whopping total of 2.9 million text messages announcing his choice of Vice President. Golly. That’s a big bill. But then again the Democractic convention is, apparently, a billion dollar business, so maybe Barack can afford a few text messages. It was also, according to Nielsen, the single largest mobile marketing event to date in the USA.
One thing I did notice was that the messages were sent very late on a Friday night. Hmmmm. In our We Love Mobile golden rules of mobile advertising, we do preach awareness about exactly when your text messages are going out. Not everyone wants to be woken up in the early hours with a Vice President announcement.
I’d have liked to see some user response engagement ‘click here to show your support’ - oooh imagine if even half of those 2.9 million had replied with a positive affirmation. Now THAT’S the start of a very special mobile marketing event.
Did any of our readers receive one, I wonder?! We’ll be keeping an eye on how Barack continues to use mobile to further his quest for the presidency …
