I wondered… Turns out my better half was trying to buy a bed online at IKEA and was using Anna, IKEA USA's "Automated Online Assistant." (On the IKEA USA homepage, you'll find a link to Anna on the top right or bottom left). "I just want to know if the bed includes a mattress!" my wife shouted. I decided to check it out. The greeting seemed inviting: "Welcome to IKEA.

Details are vague on the ad formats being trialled, the blog mentions an ‘additional branding tool’ for advertisers and Eric Schmidt has in the past expressed a a preference for ads that are embedded across the bottom of the video area itself, after trials of various ad formats on the PC Internet version of YouTube, including pre and post roll.

Is the end nigh for Pandora and Internet radio?

Depressing news via Alan Patrick at the Broadstuff blog that pioneer Internet music discovery service Pandora may be on the verge of folding. As Alan says, “it’s a real pity if this happens.” Sadly, the odds for Pandora’s survival don’t look good. And judging by the comments of founder Tim Westergren in the Washington Post, he sounds (understandably) like a man who really hasn’t got the energy to continue the fight. The double whammy of being forced to retrench the service back to the US and Canada only and trying to reach an acceptable compromise on royalties has taken its toll.

Cheap talk

You know me, no point crying over negative economic stories; recalibrate and redefine markets, and focus on the recovery. But I was grateful for the news that at least one utility isn’t going up in price while usage actually is – and that’s telecoms.Ofcom says that between 2002 and 2007 Brits doubled the time we spent talking and texting, as well as increasing our use of t’Interweb at home – and all the while households are actually spending less.Overall, each UK household spends £1.53 (1.6 per cent) less on their monthly comms bills than in 2006 and £4.31 (4.4 per cent) less than in 2004.

Stuck in Google’s sandbox? Here’s how to find your way out

[Photo courtesy Hamed Saber] Since moving to my new domain in March I’ve been stripped of my glorious Google page one rankings for my key terms (copywriter, copywriting etc), and left groveling with a begging bowl in the dank, dark depths of its search listings. Whilst a brief fall from grace was expected, I’d hoped it would only be a few months before Google learned to love me again. However, when I noticed that my Yahoo page one ranking had been reinstated I started to panic. Well, it would appear that Google has banished me to their ’sandbox’.

After BT pays up for Ribbit, so Comcast TV firm buys DailyCandy

It’s so simple. Every day, Daily Candy sends out an email featuring one cool thing that a sassy Sex-in-The-City kinda gal might fancy. Looks like they tailor it to a dozen cities. But, they reckon to be making £5m profit this year. Lovely editorial perspective. Greatly scalable. Well, a US cable TV firm just bid $125million to buy the thing. Techcrunch carries the story here. Hmmm. That’s £5m or $10m per city of coverage. Sweet exit indeed.

London digital magic continues

The challenge in searching for the Next Big Thing is that so many entrepreneurs are hard at it in Widget World - creating the business of the future. How do you grade them, rate their prospects and see clear water between them? That task has recently fallen to Chinwag, the digital commentators, who are leading a UK government trade mission - Digital Mission - to take Brit firms to big US events for a spot of exposure. No doubt, with some limelight, passes to Web 2.0 Expo and some air tickets involved, Chinwag had a big field to whittle down.

More people use online search than ever - but Google isn't winning

More people than ever before are spending part of their day searching online. The latest research from the Pew Internet group has revealed that apart from email, it's the most common thing we do online. Almost half of all people who go online each day engage in search. At first sight this might sound like it's great news for Google. But it isn't - look inside the report of this study and you discover that the reason for the dramatic increase in search is not taking place in search engines.
