In his post he talks about the "hero shot" or an image on your page that captures the visitor's attention and defines your product or brand. This got me thinking about not just how important the quality of the images on a website are but how important it is to match the text to the images to convey an overall tone that helps drive the visitor to make a purchase.

However the internet brought us a host of resources and databases where you can get precious information for FREE. This article covers a variety of tools that we use on a daily basis when dissecting existing markets for our clients, discovering new ones, or keeping a close eye on the latest trends.

Googlebot’s Hot Date

Google has published an article on the Google Webmaster Central Blog explaining the relationship between the Googlebots and crawled websites. I have to say that it's somewhat cheesy the way it has been addressed by emulating a conversion in a hot date between the website and the Googlebot. However, it's worth reading as it explains how Googlebot interacts with websites and how it navigates through them. For example, if Googlebot is crawling for web search it ignores .JPG or .MP3 files, or if it's crawling for Google Scholar it prioritises .DOC or .PDF files.

Canonical URLs, SEO and .htaccess

It is very common for web sites to have multiple urls pointing to the same page. This happens especially to a website's home page and where content management systems generate dynamic urls. It wouldn't be wrong to say that the following urls are all the same: http://helloworld.com http://helloworld.com/index.html http://www.helloworld.com http://www.helloworld.com/index.html In actual fact they are, and typically all the above web addresses would display the same web page. From a SEO perspective that's where the problem lies.

Search marketing will only succeed if you know your target market

For the non-search marketers reading this blog, Sphinn is a niche search marketing social media site - it's essentially Digg or Reddit for those of us who work in search. The "What's New" page of Sphinn on Friday afternoon inspired me. Around lunchtime in the UK you always start to see a lot spam submissions. Today's submissions, however, were a bit different - less spam and more a case of "What are they thinking?" The following examples come from search marketers submitting real content - to the completely wrong market.

Dear Google, why has my (spam) site been banned from your index?

While trying to find some simple articles for a client today, we stumbled across the following comment on the Official Google Webmaster Central Blog: OK, so, this spammer has made a post on the official Google blog asking why his site hasn't been indexed and adding a spammy, keyword stuffed link to a second site. Now, do we need to spell out why his site disappeared from Google? For the record, the site in his username contains syndicated article content - all duplicates.

Autogenerated content - just say no to gibberish!

With "content is king" the SEO mantra of the last five years, many businesses are tempted to look for programs that can create coherent, autogenerated text focused on their target keywords. Before you decide to use autogenerated content as a means to promote your business, read this snippet of text, produced by one of the best content generators I've yet to encounter: The door has been a basic part of every building since people lived in caves. There are many different variations of doors, but they fall into two main classifications.
